Wat Phra That Doi Wao is one of the ancient Phra Thats in Chiang Rai province; the most ancient belongs to Phra That Doi Tung. In the past, the King Wao who ruled Yonok Nakorn built this place in order to store Buddha’s hair in 364 B.E. Wao is a Lanna language which means a scorpion.
The perfect time to visit is the full moon day on 5th month of Thai lunar calendar, north (the 3rd month south which is Magha Puja Day) as there is a ritual to worship Phra That each year. Also, during Songkran Day, local people will sprinkle water onto a Buddha image. Near Phra That, local food and souvenir shop are available such as Mae Salong , fruits in winter season and beautiful handicrafts
