The Koh Samet Ngam community is an OTOP Village that is known for their adaptable products created from Papyrus or also known as Paper Reed. The leaves are used to make livable handmade crafts such as the famous Chanthaboon mat which is a weaved mat in a traditional style only known to Chanthaburi. Other than weaved mats are coasters, tissue box cover, bags and many other creative items.
All these products could be bought at the Craft Conservative Center, a place which focuses on preserving the arts and tradition of weaving and working with paper reeds. The center also serves as an educational place for visitors who would want to see a real demonstration of “Feem” the weaving device that requires 2 weavers creating different pattern styles like the Lai Ku (double), Lai Takaek, Lai Ta Kam.
Besides the Baan Samet Ngam community, there are a few more sight seeing and educational locations you can visit while you are in the area such as the King Taksin The Great’s Dock museum where it is assumed that here is where King Taksin The Great has assembled his army troops into gaining Siam’s independence from Burma in 1767. There is also the international Mangrove Forest botanical Garden, Rama IX for some bird watching or botanic garden walk for relaxation.
